King Size Bed — Standard Pillows

The master bedroom has a king-sized bed so when I buy a sheet set I get king-sized pillow cases.

I like to use a variety of pillow cases.

I keep a dozen pillows on the bed but they’re all standard size.

The pink fabricis a king-sized case under a standard case.

Since I don’t want to have the extra-long cases I decided to shorten them.

The king-sized cases are 5″ to 7″ longer than a standard.

Some of them have a decorative detail at the open end or a flapped opening.

First turn the pillow case inside out and cut the closed end of the larger pillow case to size.

Instead of cutting off the case at the open end and rehemming, I decided to turn the pillow case inside out, resew the end seam to a standard size, and cut off the excess.

Sew a simple seam on the end of the pillow case.

This was a truly quick and easy project since my sewing machine was already set up.

Do you sleep on lots of pillows?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. What do you do at night with all the extra pillows? I only use one (a memory foam “cooling” pillow) and Eric uses two. When we bought our king-size Tempurpedic it came with two substandard-size pillows–go figure!
