House To-Do List – 2017

I used to organize the house to-do list in one long list that I added to as I thought of something new.  Here’s the updated room by room view at the end of 2015.  Lots done in the ensuing year.

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Wow, look at your crossed off list! Congratulations on your transformations. In the hallway, what about just putting up some picture ledges so you can easily change the picture displays? The thought of hanging all those pictures is daunting to me. I still haven’t changed my clocks. I don’t work or go anywhere on Sunday morning so I decided to do it during the day. It gave me an easier night of sleeping.

  2. I’m an engineer so my office has big rolls of paper. People say to lay galleries out on the floor. If you did it on a big piece of paper you could mark where the nails go, tape it up, put all the nails in, rip the paper off, and be done.

It’s great to see so many things done and the receding of the post-construction clutter. And it looks like you have some big items on this year’s list. The deck will be fun. I still have roof deck envy.

      1. I did one for a friend’s family (paid, during my post-grad unemployment) and did the whole thing with coordinates measured off a baseline point. Somehow, I got the the arrangement exactly right except that the whole thing was 5 inches off. I just moved all the nails over and let the pictures hide my mistake.
