A Practical Present

I’m in the habit of buying practical gifts for my favorite family members and friends.

Very few choices in thermal underwear.

Think underwear. I went to 5 stores and finally found thermal underwear at Target.  It was priced as clearance but only black was available.  I bought one set.

These colorful lounge pants are not Charlie's style.

Pajama pants were also on my list and I could only find one pair. So for Valentine’s Day Charlie is getting pajama pants and long johns.

I stuffed them in a bag and will surprise him today with a gift from the heart.

Not romantic but necessary.

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. I went to Walgreen’s last week to buy a Valentine’s Day card for David. I picked it out, turned it over to check the price, it was $6.29 — and it was nothing special. I did not buy it. I came home and suggested that we not exchange cards, but combine our resources and take our $13+ (with tax) and go to one of our favorites for Valentine’s Day — Steak N Shake. It’s a date. Total tab will be under $15.00. Celebrating 35 years of marriage in 2017. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

  2. When my sister was trying to figure out a gift for my dad (Charlie, with a twin brother named Joe), she hmmed and hawed about figuring out something more original than a restaurant gift certificate. I said, “It’s that or socks.” She admitted I was right and sent me out to fetch her a restaurant gift certificate a couple of days later.
