A Custom Piece for The Cottage

In the Cottage there is not much room for regular furniture.

My floor plan of the Cottage is adjustable.

Although the fact that we went big with the sofa makes it appear bigger than it is.

Something about the scale of the TV and the cabinet it's on is out of proportion.

The television stand is a bit bulky for the space.

This red lacquered console can be had for $2,000 plus freight.

A narrow console under the window so as not to interfere with he view would be nice. The console above gives great inspiration but is a bit too large for the space and $2,000 is too hard on the budget.

The Byas low console might fit just under the window.

The tenant saw one in white at Ikea which is only $130.

I think we could make a console similar to this one that would perfectly fit under the Cottage window.

I think we could actually build one and give it a Southwestern vibe to jibe with the rug.

Would you build your own furniture?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Totally would if I could. A console could provide your tenant with a lot of storage if she needs it. I think I’d go for something with doors or drawers.

    1. Because I accidentally posted this last night and had to repost this morning. Every so often I lose track of the date and put the wrong info in. Sorry. Jo

  2. I love the look of the last console and will be watching with interest if you can make it! To me, it would be better with cupboards and shelves of some sort. Maybe one day I’ll complete enough of my other projects to venture into a furniture-making project. 😉
