Standing Lamps

We have 4 standing lamps.

Standing lamps are useful in dark corners.

I’m going to get rid of half of them even though it will be difficult to decide which ones.

1. Traditional standing lamp which I have painted silver.

It used to be brass.

I really started appreciating if after I added the Paris lampshade.

2. Inherited standing lamp with vellum shade.

I think this lamp has been painted gold. I would change the color to a darker metallic.

3. Brass shell lamp.

I'm sure I'll keep this lamp but I want to change its brass color.

4.  My beloved drafting lamp. I’ve had it since college.

The drafting lamp has a heavy base and works well.

I’m going to part with it but first I’m going to sing its praises.

The drafting lamp has 2 types of lighting.

The lamp has both a round fluorescent tube and a traditional incandescent screw-in bulb. The tube minimizes shadows while the bulb warms the tone. And, if both types of bulbs are installed, the head of the lamp is counterweighted so it can be stationary in any position.

Have you saved any items since college?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. In the attic I have a foot locker that I painted. In it are some college artifacts, including a sheepskin hippie purse and a lot of letters between me and my mom. Someday I’ll get them out and read them.
