Upgrades to a Garage Apartment

I am helping to freshen up a garage apartment with two bedrooms and a living room which is being improved with paint and new appliances . The best part for me is that for the most part it’s not a DIY project.

Most of the apartment had been painted swine peach with tan trim.

The new color is Benjamin Moore's "Dove White" with "Revere Pewter" trim and doors.

Over the next week or so, before new tenants move in, the entire place is getting painted.

We'll be removing the full-size refrigerator.
The kitchen is getting a major upgrade.

And a mini-kitchen (much like the one in the Cottage) is being replaced.

This vanity set-up will be replaced.

The bathroom is a dungeon but we’ll try to improve it with a new vanity, sink, and lighting fixture.  We discovered that the exhaust fan in the bathroom which turns on with the light doesn’t actually draw so it will also be replaced.

The small blue bedroom is also going white with grey trim.

And it will be partially furnished.

In today’s post are the “before” shots.

The entry was very dark with wood paneling on walls and ceiling.

The walls were primed with oil primer and finished with "White Dove".

Even the entry way is getting lightened and brightened.

Would you care if your new living quarters had been freshly painted? Or would you prefer to pick your own colors?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. “Swine peach” – love the name. The color – not so much. So glad it’s been painted. Picking colors is daunting, so I might be glad it had already been done, especially since it’s such an improvement over the old colors.

    1. We picked these colors quickly. I had some swatches in the car, laid them out on the table, and 3 of us concurred. Maybe easier than picking them for one’s own house. Jo
