Rearranging the Cottage Floorplan

Glade Cottage has a floating wall.

The twin bed is positioned between the front door and the floating wall.

Ever since the wall was built it has been positioned about 5 feet from the back wall of the Cottage.

The washer and dryer were hooked up on the back wall of the Cottage.

It hid the washer and dryer from view but allowed easy access.

The wall behind the bed is moveable and can be repositioned.

In the new floorplan the double bed will be behind the wall.

Our new tenant has decided to move the wall forward and to position the bed behind the wall instead of in front for privacy’s sake.

The back wall of the Cottage is plumbed for a washer including a dryer vent.

We’ll be upgrading the wall soon to serve in its new position.

Have you ever used a floating wall or solid screen to create a private alcove?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. My goal is still to put a wall up in my living room to make one end of the room like a pantry or storage room. What exactly is a floating wall? Does it go ceiling to floor? Or is it just like a room divider? I think we’re planning on building the wall but it might be nice to start with something temporary just to make sure we like it.

    1. The floating wall is about 4 inches short of the ceiling and is not connected to the floor and so can be repositioned at will. Jo
