New Vacuum Cleaner

This might be an impulse purchase but I think I have good reason.

We've been using this vacuum for decades.
We’ve been using this vacuum for decades.

First of all, our regular vacuum cleaner is very heavy and has a broken attachment hose.

Dragging an upright vacuum cleaner up the steps is a drag.

I’ve been wanting another vacuum so I wouldn’t have to lug the old one up and down the steps.

Consumer Reports credentials for the Hoover vacuum.

Meanwhile I received an ad in the mail for Consumer Reports which pointed out that a Hoover Wind-Tunnel Series for $130 works better than a $400 Oreck.   So on the way to work I stopped into Lowes and Home Depot to price them up.

Lowes has a big selection of vacuums but no Hoovers.

Lowes doesn’t sell Hoover.

I was surprised to see a recommended vacuum on sale.

Home Depot, however, sells Hoovers and had a Wind-Tunnel Rewind Pet on sale for $88.

I couldn’t walk away.

I guess I'll be cleaning the floors this weekend.

I bought it.

I might have to buy another one for the second floor.

Do you have one household appliance you’d like to replace immediately?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Vacuuming is not fun. I would rather. Do just about any chore other than vacuum. I highly recommend having a well functioning, light vacuum on each floor to keep you from putting off this dreaded task.

  2. I agree, anything to make vacuuming easy is worth it! I splurged on a Dyson Ball at Costco a few years ago to replace my Oreck, which just wasn’t getting the pet hair well enough. I still hate vacuuming, but since Eric retired this week, HE did it, and I like that a lot more!!!
