Cleaning the Espresso Machine

Four years ago we bought an espresso machine.

Rancilio Silva espresso machine.

We use it everyday and, of course, we clean it after we use it.

A morning cappuccino is a perfect start to the day for me.

Charlie noticed that it wasn’t running as well as it had been and it was making a different sound when it was brewing coffee.

A package of Cleancaf came with the espresso machine.

He decided to use Cleancaf to clean the inside of the machine.

The Cleancaf is mixed in warm water.

One packet of Cleancaf was added to a quart of warm water.

It was strange to see sudsy water in the water reservoir.

Then he poured the mixture into the water reservoir.

Surprisingly the water ran brown.

He ran the mixture through the machine by turning on the power button and the brew button. The first round was brown.

Two quarts of water ran dark.

The second round was lighter.

We ran one more quart of water through the mcahine after the water ran clean.

And finally the third round was clear.

Our clean Rancilio.

The machine should run better and the coffee might even taste better.

Do you have coffee in the morning?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. I dislike coffee strongly, so I am a tea person. But I find it hard to start the day without my (very caffeinated) tea! Hubby is a coffee person. He brews his own with ground coffee and brew cups or whatever those plastic cones are you put over your mug with a filter placed inside.
