A New Room Plan

I’m trying to convince a friend of mine to let me help her paint her living room.

A not-to-scale drawing of the living room I'd like to paint.

The room probably measures about 9 feet by 12 feet.

My friend's room has faux white brick next to dark wood paneling similar to the picture above.

Now the walls are a mixture of textures and colors:

The wall on the right of the front door is faux white painted brick with black lines painted in the mortar section.

The adjacent wall behind the sofa is super dark wood paneling.

My first thought was to paint the walls white and put a beautiful rose pink (my friend’s favorite color) on the ceiling except that the ceiling flows through the rest of the first floor and into the kitchen without physical barrier so I nixed that idea.

White Dove for the walls and Simply White for the ceiling and trim.

Instead the ceiling also needs to be white.  I am thinking of suggesting Benjamin Moore’s Simply White on the ceiling and trim and White Dove on the walls.

An Ikea Ektorp in beige would also brighten the space.

I also have plans to replace the sofa and maybe the rug.

A new rug would mean pulling up the old wall-to-wall. I wonder what's underneath.

I’ll really have to be sneaky persuasive to pull that off.

What line of logic would you use to convince a friend that she wants your help?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Well I was gonna say that I’d drop it if your friend isn’t interested. But actually when I was in a similar situation remodeling a condo for my grandmother, I forced her to get an extra gallon of paint for her bathroom instead of using leftovers from another room that I thought would clash.

    1. Friend brought the idea of painting her living room to me. Friend is interested just not amenable to having something done as a favor she can’t do for herself. I’ll be gentle. Picked up the swatches this morning. Jo

  2. I would show MY friend what great progress I’ve made on my own living room. That would change her mind!!
Can you pry off the paneling and see if there’s a plaster or sheetrock wall underneath? Not to make more work for you …
