Labeling the Book Swap

Instead of having people just heap their books all together on one table at the Book Swap I have divided the books up into categories.

I used 8.5″ by 11″ card stock folded in half for table labels. I hand-printed the various categories and spread them throughout the house.

I had to rewrite this label because I spelled "spirituality" wrong on the first try. (I missed an "i" and tied to sneak it in.)

Since the books will be spread all over the ground floor of the house, including the  porch, I’ve made a simple map to guide folks to the various piles of books both for contributing the books they brought and taking the ones they want.

Most people will enter by through the porch near the driveway where the "Gardening" books will be displayed.

The kitchen, while not housing any books, will be the service area for our food.  That’s on the map as well.

We’ve had quite a bit of rain this week so our thoughts of people eating outside has sort of fallen by the wayside as the yard is fairly wet and in some places muddy.

Still there’s plenty of seating in the kitchen, in the living room and in the conservatory.

This morning we’re finishing up the food prep and  waiting for everyone to show up.

What’s your rainy day mantra?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Jo, your signs and map are genius. It looks like it will be a lovely event. I have to clean up my piles of pulled weeds today. Too bad there are just as many still in the beds yet to be pulled.

  2. It always blows me away that you can be entertaining guests yet have time to write a blog post the same day! You must get up at 4:00 a.m.! Good luck with the book swap–it sounds like fun!
