Clearing the Decks

I’m not exactly clearing the decks, i.e. floors, because they’re fairly clear.

The top of the piano is fair game for books.

I’m clearing other horizontal surfaces in the mud room, living room, and dining room in preparation for the book swap.

I've started piling my books on the dining room table. I'm not limited to 10 like everyone else.

In addition to collecting my own swappable books from around house I’m making places for what I hope will be at least 200 books brought in by guests.

The coffee table and the mantel both will display available books.

Décor books and art books will go on display in the living room.

The narrow counter between the kitchen and dining room can hold books.

Cookbooks on the shelf near the kitchen.

A small ledge in the mudroom will greet swappers with paper backs.

Every horizontal surface is fair game.

Even the small silverware chest is cleared for books.

The real trick is going to be keeping the surfaces clear until May 7.

What book have you especially enjoyed reading?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.
