Found a New Favorite

When Charlie and I attend a Baltimore Symphony concert at the Meyerhof we always stopped at Dougherty’s before hand to have a bite to eat.

The era of our favorite pub is gone.

Alas Dougherty’s has closed for good and we needed a new place to get something to eat.

Up a flight from street level is the café.

I did a Google search and found “Soup’s On” about 2 blocks from the concert hall. We’ve eaten there twice.

The soups and sandwiches are made in the kitchen of this old row house.

The tables are brightly painted with soup recipes.

The décor is quirky.

The cook/waiter is the owner and doesn’t accept tips.

Most of the soups have unusual combinations of ingredients so it’s difficult to remember exactly what I ordered but Charlie had a delicious bowl of French onion soup.

What’s a favorite dive in your city?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Oh! My friend used to work for the Baltimore symphony! After one summer night, watching them play outside, he proposed to me. Very romantic. We love so many places around there. I can’t choose just one favorite dive.
