Planning a Birthday Dinner

Our oldest son’s birthday is next week so I gave him the choice of going out to dinner or making his favorite dinner.

Here is son giving Charlie a hand with some heavy hauling.

He chose me cooking at home.  When I asked him did he want me to tell him what I thought his favorite dinner is, he said he would like to be surprised.

Actually I'm happy to cook in the new kitchen.

That’s crazy, right?

We'll use his great-grandmother's china -- Esteem by Noritake.

We’re going to have:

  • crab cakes

  • baked potatoes
  • baked penne and cheese
  • asparagus and
  • sweet corn.

We have bags of frozen corn that Charlie cut off the cob last summer.

For dessert I’m making brownies from scratch with vanilla ice cream and homemade fudge sauce. (As I was writing I realized I have never shared my recipes for either the brownies or the fudge sauce. Maybe next week.)

I'll make the brownies in my heart-shaped tin for this special occasion.

I don’t know if that’s his favorite dinner but it might be mine. The only thing I like better is steamed crabs.

What’s your favorite meal?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.
