Granite Samples

When we were looking for granite for the kitchen island I picked up a number of samples.

I laid the granite samples on the top of the wannabe kitchen island.

These samples were not expected to be returned.

These granite samples are now just taking up space.

I still have them.

The samples are different sizes.

Can anyone think of a use for these small blocks, approximately 5″ by 5″, of granite?

We ultimately chose River White as our island's granite top.

Or, if not, how do I get rid of them? Recycle, land fill, what?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Make a table top for the porch? . Set them into a frame of wood the same thickness to make drink coasters? I hope someone has some good ideas that are easy because I have several squares of marble that I also need to find a use for

  2. I have a stack of samples in my garage. I like to keep them because, often times, people ask my opinion about granite choices. They are able to come over and look and maybe borrow one to see how they like it in their kitchen. They are incredibly heavy!!

  3. Some suggestions:
Paving stones as part of an artistic walkway.
Build into a small table top.
Marble counters for a doll’s house.
Cover backs with felt and use as trivets.
Ammunition for a small garden trebuchet.

  4. A few more ideas: pot plant or ornament stands, or you could glue candle holders onto them, bookends, stack ’em on top of each other to create a small sculpture…
