Christmassy Accents

After keeping house for 40 years and joining two households 6 years ago, we have many different styles of Christmas decorations in our cache.

A little pink in the otherwise cool living room is welcome.

I have learned over the years to edit the Christmas ornaments and decorations that I set out.

The tiny crèche came without a manger. We're using a piece of Connemara marble.

In keeping with the spirit of the season I set out our tiniest Mexican crèche on the black stenciled magazine table.

Just things from around the house.

I also set out some blue, green, and silver items — some Christmas, some not — on the mantel. (Color inspiration.)

We're wondering if the quince will bloom again in spring.

To give the mantel some height and warmth we cut branches of our flowering quince bush which doesn’t usually bloom until spring. It’s been so warm that the sprawling bush is in full bloom.  The bees are giving it a daily visit.

Since it's too warm to have a fire in the hearth maybe I'll add some candles.

We’ll be lighting candles all over the house later today. Party starts at 4.

Is today a shopping day for you?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. No, this is a clean off the bed in the office (again!) day. Too much paper clutter since the computer had to be replaced in October and trips up North intervened. Had a great day yesterday but 5+ inches of rain, so it’s pretty soggy here. Hope your party is a blast.
