Merry Christmas from Charlie and Jo

We had such a lovely Christmas eve getting the house ready for guests.

This is as uncluttered and decorated as we’ve been since last New Year’s eve, our last party.

I chose a hand-embroidered tablecloth and napkins from Holland to go with pink details.

I spent some of yesterday morning ironing table linens — 2 tablecloths and a few dozen napkins.

I always try to use an odd number of flowers in a bouquet -- 9 for the middle of the table arrangement.

I also organized two and a half dozen roses into four arrangements.

Charlie had put lights on the live tree about ten days ago.  I finished with balls, special decorations, and strands of ribbon.

The weather has been an unseasonably warm 70 degrees so the fireplace will not be necessary for warming the room.

Today we’re going to breakfast at Starbucks, take in an early church service, and enjoy the day together.

I'm hoping people will spread out all over the house instead of 20 people stuffed into the living room.

I’m planning to get out the good dishes and do a bit of cooking.  Just enough to keep us from going hungry. Nothing fancy.

Alas, the bathroom in the conservatory is not yet usable -- if you know what I mean.

Christ is born!

If you could eat only one holiday dish what would it be?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. I’m loving what you’ve done to the place! We aren’t quite the traditional family and usually it’s just the four of us. And if that is the case we always have wonton soup that I make. It’s our tradition I guess you can say! 🙂 Best wishes to you in the new year to come! Cheers, Koko
