Little Detail Decisions

All of the electric fixtures on the outside of the house are installed on a white mounting plate.

The dark fixtures and electric outlet (behind the bench) on the side porch were mounted on white plates.

When we started painting the house I had left the plates white.

Once the house was painted grey the white area behind the front porch light looked wrong.

When almost everything was  painted I decided the white margin around the fixtures, especially because it was not even on all sides, didn’t look right.

Close-up the improvement is not as apparent as at a distance.

Using the detail brush I carefully painted the brackets the same color as the house.

Even a few steps back the lights look better.

We’re also planning to paint the 4 white air ducts on the outside of the house but I’ll be waiting for a windless day when I can use the spray painter.

One of the offending air ducts is on the conservatory wall which faces the street.

The finishing stroke is near at hand.

Have you been oscillating over a small decision?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.
