End of the Week, End of the Month

We’re under the gun to get something finished today.

The fall color is stunning viewed from the conservatory. I could sit and enjoy it all day.

The weather is partly sunny with no rain but the high is only going to be 59 degrees. We don’t like to paint outside in less than 50-degree weather so we might have to wait for the day to warm up a bit.

We need a tall ladder to finish the top part of the house that faces the back yard.

We have a number of projects we’ve been working on. The largest and most time/weather sensitive is the exterior painting.

Charlie painted up the side of the new addition as far as a 12-foot ladder would allow.

We’ve been knocking out some areas over the past week so the only parts that remain are the entire front and the high areas that can only be reached with a 24-foot ladder.

Here's where we were working 2 weeks ago.
Two weeks ago we used the 24-foot ladder in 2 sections — one on the ground and one on the porch roof.

We took the ladder apart 2 weeks ago to use the pieces on the roof so now we must reassemble it.

The lumber has been painted, cut, and drilled.

We also have all the pieces cut and drilled for the bedroom shelving.  We can’t finish this without help from our carpenter friend who is scheduled to drop by.

The area around the duct and near the pipes (on the ruby paper) need to be level with the floor.

Charlie needs to fill in the small areas around the pipes on the conservatory bathroom floor in preparation for the tiler who is scheduled for November which begins tomorrow.

No progress in the dining room.

Finally I have been very lax in my attack of the dining room wallpaper and paint since I have been helping with the exterior painting.

I would love to wake up to see with this wall covered with bookshelves.

I’ll be happy tomorrow morning that we turn our clocks back one hour tonight. An extra hour’s sleep will be welcome.

Do you sleep better in the cool weather?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Wow, that’s a lot going on at once! I love the colors of the trees in the first pic! Beautiful!! Everything is looking great. Hopefully you can finish up that painting before it gets too cool outside. Those ladders on the porch roof look terrifying…lol! I normally sleep good in cool weather but due to a sore wrist, I haven’t slept much in days.

    1. Aches and pains are certainly sleep interrupting. The impending cold weather is lighting a fire under our exterior work. (Pun intended.) Jo
