The Plumber’s Proposal

I had the plumber come out to the house to give me an estimate for supplying and installing shower fixtures in our 2 new bathrooms.

Recently he sent me the proposal broken into 3 jobs:

Job #1 Water heater for the Cottage

Conservatory shower -- the fixtures are on the right-hand wall.

Job #2  Conservatory Bathroom

Job #3  Master Bathroom

Starting with the conservatory bathroom the plumber will supply a Moen Arris Posi-temp shower diverter trim with showerhead and arm in brushed nickel — $480.65. A quick check on Amazon came up with $500.81. Same at Home Depot.

I chose this Moen Vestige trim in chrome for the master shower.

The Moen Vestige Moentrol multi-function shower diverter trim in chrome is $138.25 (which includes shipping costs because it is a discontinued item). Faucet Direct and Amazon seem to have it for $87.93 presumably because it’s discontinued.

The master bath will have an 8-inch rainshower head hanging from the ceiling.

The 8-inch chrome showerhead is $144.55 plus a 6-inch chrome arm for hanging it from the ceiling, $11.53. The showerhead is $168.19 at Amazon and FaucetDirect.

I've chosen a handheld shower that looks like a microphone just in case I feel like singing in the shower.

Finally the handheld shower is $150.98 and needs a chrome drop 90 degree elbow which costs $37.37. At Amazon and FaucetDirect the shower is $163.73 plus the drop elbow, $25.91.

This shower my inspiration for the master shower -- ceiling rainhead, round window, marble tile, bench, handheld shower.

All in all the price for the fixtures is about $5 cheaper online but I would have had the hassle of doing the ordering and the final job would not have the same guarantee. Last but certainly not least: the cost of the install labor will be between $800 and $900. That brings the total cost to around $1900.

This is my inspiration for the smaller conservatory shower -- round window, frosted glass subway tile.

The showers were tricky for us but we’ll definitely be saving some money by doing our own sink and toilet installations.

Do you ever wonder why you start a huge project? Do you realize just how epic it will be at the start?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. I have this exact feeling and it’s always at the height of the mess, with dust everywhere and everything cramped in spaces they just don’t belong in. The thing is you’ll spend so much time in the shower and if you do a bathroom perfectly once you’ll have years of never having to think about it again – Stick in there, you’ll be ever so happy and proud when it’s all done 🙂

    1. Just the encouragement I need to make it through the rest of 2015. It won’t quite be finished by then but I bet I’ll take a shower or two. Thanks. Jo

  2. Do I ever wonder why we started a project?? HAHAHAHAHA!! You know the answer to that one! 🙂 I don’t think $1900 is bad for what you’re getting. Plumbing must be done right, and it’s not a place to try to save money by DIY. These baths are going to look so good … and you will feel confident about the workmanship.

    1. We try to weigh the practical against the price. I have not been successful with plumbing so I almost always hire someone especially when the works are behind a wall. Jo
