Time Now to Renovate the Old Girl

Back in April of 2013 after my first knee operation I got serious about fitness.

Instead of going to the gym before work I stayed home every morning to greet the contractors and sub-contractors.

Then came the renovation and another knee operation.

In January I was taking photos and interviewing sub-contractors from my bed while I iced my knee.

Basically I’ve been out of commission for a couple of years. After my knee operation in January I was ready to return to the gym and actually tried once or twice but a painful cyst had formed behind my knee which made working out (and even walking) excruciating.  Exercise was counter-indicated.

Fast forward to the beginning of September when I started easy with just a walking regimen.

I have finished a month at the gym stepping up my physical activity by walking on the treadmill increasing both time and speed.  Next on the list is adding my favorite circuit training routine from Jillian Michael’s book Winning By Losing.

I’m wearing my old workout gear (which fits only because it’s stretchy) until some of my idleness weight gain reduces.

80 ounces of water - Ugh!
I’m not quite up to 80 ounces of water but I’m halfway there.

I’ve cut butter from my diet and increased my water consumption.

Gym bag is packed and ready to go.

Now I’m working on the reward I give myself when I can fit into my clothes in the next size down. Let me know if you’re interested in before and after photos.

What kind of treat do you reward good behavior with?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. that’s awesome that you can walk again! good for you for getting back in shape. i have been so out of shape lately, it’s pitiful. i’m hoping to start walking outside this weekend. i used to walk outside 5 days a week but then last winter happened and i got so mentally hammered that i haven’t walked since… lol

  2. Good for you! Have you thought about buying your own treadmill, so you wouldn’t have to trek to the gym for that? I hate walking the ‘mill, but at least I can do it anytime I want, and watch TV to pass the time. I don’t care for the way it looks in the corner of my dining room, though. No place else to put the monster …

    1. I love going to the gym — it’s halfway between home and work. They have every kind of apparatus and the trainers there are very cheery (even though I don’t use a trainer). It’s starts my day on the right note. At home I get too distracted to exercise. Jo
