From Catchall to Serene Haven

Our master bedroom has become the holding place for all sorts of stuff.

Before the closet gets configured with hanging racks we need to install a floor.

In our defense the master closet is not yet finished.

Charlie's dresser piled with clothing.

But I’ve decided that’s not a good enough reason to leave it empty and pile our floor and dressers high with clothing.

I've had piles of framed photos on the bedroom floor while waiting to hang them in the upstairs hall.

I’ve been wanting to make a photo gallery in the hall outside the bedroom. Is that a good reason to pile photos on the floor?

I've been using this area as a make-shift closet for my work clothes.

I moved Charlie’s and my clothing from the bedroom into our closet — such as it is. I’d been hanging mine on the front of my dresser and on the handles of the French doors.

The bathroom lighting fixtures are tucked in the corner of the bedroom under bubble wrap.

A few things remain like the lighting fixtures for the master bathroom which will be installed after the flooring, after the double sink vanity.  This is strictly for safekeeping of fragile fixtures.

Charlie's side table. Don't worry, it gets better.

We even cleared off our side tables which get piled high with reading materials and remote controls. (Candy and snacks in Charlie’s case.)

When we finally set up our sleigh bed frame I have plans for the wall over the bed.

It won’t be long until we switch to cold weather bedding however I washed the bed pad and quilt along with the sheets this week.  Everything is clean and fresh.

Our room still needs baseboard trim.

To encourage Charlie to keep his dresser clear I put photos of the children up there.

I'd like to refinish or paint my dresser one day.

My dresser is a little more cluttered since I’m anticipating bookshelves for my collection of etiquette books.

My goal -- keep it this way.

I’m sure I had a more restful night’s sleep due the uncluttered and serene atmosphere.  I even plugged in our air purifier. Aaaaah.

Do you find your special room becomes overrun with necessary but extraneous items?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. I feel like we are living in a parallel universe LOL everything you have written is exactly what we have been going through , it must be a renovation thing

  2. You are a brave woman, Jo, to post those before pictures. I have company coming, so I’m being forced into deep cleaning and decluttering mode. Even outside. Your bedroom will be such a haven when you are finished with the closet, bathroom and bookshelves.

    1. Thank you. Another gift from my mother who saw it at an auction and bought it for me years ago. It’s been in both the living room and dining room and now in the bedroom. Jo
