Getting Ready for Another Weekend Work Session

I woke up yesterday morning (at 4:30 a.m.) just itching to get into some project before heading off to work at 8 a.m.

The outside of the front door really needs to be painted.

I thought I could paint the front door.

The front door used to be reddish.

When I moved in 18 years ago it was a maroonish barn red color along with many other accents both inside and outside the house.

I changed the door from red to blue.
I changed the door from red to blue.

I had painted it dark blue which I always liked.

Before painting the door I washed it with soapy vinegar water to get off the old grime.

Since I wanted to use the original door on the house our contractor sent it out to be fitted into a weatherproof door frame. The process included filling in the hole for the old knob and lock and moving the hinges to the opposite side.

The X-shaped windows are distinctive.

The planing and sanding helped the old color to show through.

See where I started the painting?

Instead of getting right to the door I swept down the cobwebs on the porch and tried some house color (Sandy Hook Gray) on the shingles.

I'm excited about the color change.
I’m excited about the color change.

So the plan for today is to finish the front porch, shingles and door, then move to the side porch.

The color I originally chose for the porch ceiling was too vivid.
I’m planning on Blue Heather (Benjamin Moore) for the porch ceiling.  It’ might have to be cut with some white to make it lighter.

I also bought a can of paint to change the primed white porch ceilings blue.

Got plans?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. That’s the difference between you and me–the only thing I’m itchin; to do at 4:30 a.m. is sleep! But, more power to you … you get a lot more done.
