Frozen Food

Our favorite crops in the potager are Sun Gold tomatoes, French beans, and cucumbers.

I steam these French filet beans until just tender.

I’ve been having a tomato sandwich everyday for the past month. Yum.

In addition to enjoying summer’s bounty from the garden, Charlie preps fruits and corn for the freezer.

He takes sweet corn off the cob, cooks it, and packs the kernels in plastic bags. He also pits peaches, nectarines, cherries, and cleans strawberries all of which make delicious smoothies.

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. I have a good amount of beans and we are going away soon. I need to freeze them so we don’t lose them. I’m glad you posted this. I wouldn’t have thought freeze them. My brain isn’t thinking lately.

    1. We have frozen beans cooked and uncooked. The taste and texture are about the same. Charlie recommends at least washing them before freezing. Jo

    1. I don’t do the garden but Charlie does spend a lot of time there. I guess that’s why result are good. Look forward to seeing your grape harvest.
