Neglected Chores

Our house stays fairly cool in summer even though we don’t have central air conditioning.

One unit cools the entire master suite.

We do have a window unit in our bedroom which has been running fairly regularly at night for the past few weeks as the weather has been hot and humid.

The entire insides were wiped down with Clorox disinfectant wipes.

Charlie noticed that in addition to a dusty filter some dark spots (mildew?) had appeared on other parts of the unit.

It's important not to pry the plastic parts too vehemently because they might break.

He took the front off (held on by two screws) and vacuumed the coils.

After a good vacuuming the coils are much cleaner.

The unit is working better and cleaner now.

What small but necessary chore have you been avoiding?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. This is the exact model we have in our bedroom, except I set ours to 68–I want it COLD! I use disinfectant spray in our units. Sometimes they start to smell like feet! Eww!
