Charlie’s June Garden

In June our Charlie’s vegetable garden is growing well and starting to produce a few edibles.

The radish bed is one 4' by 4' square.

The most noticeable growth are the green tops of the radishes.

The rosy roots of the radish begin to push up through the soil on their own as they mature.

But under the soil and almost bursting forth on its own is the spicy pink root.

Charlie will clean these and share them with friends as there are way too many for 2 people to enjoy.

A bunch of these Pink Beauties is like a stunning bouquet of  flowers still in the bud.

We’re also harvesting last year’s leeks and onions as needed for cooking.

They’re going to seed which looks very sci-fi in the garden. In the center of the photo above is the cucumber trellis.

Be sure to leave a space under the bottom supports to get the ball of string around so one continuous piece can be used.

Charlie builds the trellises with “found and free” bamboo on which he stings climbing twine.

The cucumber plants are filling out their own 4' by 4' square.

The cucumber plants are still small but their tendrils will soon pull them up the trellis.

Radishes, onions, cucumbers — that’s enough garden talk for today.

Is your gardening starting well this year?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

  1. Such a great looking garden. Ours is doing well and the only thing which didn’t grow was Luffah. I did some research before planting it and for our area I knew it would be a tough one. Oh well, I’ll try again next year because I want some Luffah!

    1. One year we tried growing potatoes in tires. Total fail and now Charlie doesn’t want to try potatoes again. I want home grown spuds. Maybe next year. Jo

  2. Our square garden inside the patio is doing very good. I’ll post 2 pix on facebook. We have eaten about a dozen cherry tomatoes and are anxiously awaiting our large ones. Hope all is well!!
