Hardiebackering the Shower Controls

We have two different control handle configurations on our new showers and both need to have Hardie backer applied to the walls.

The master bathroom has two different control valves in the shower.

The master shower has a double control for the shower head and the spray with a triangular plastic piece covering the pipes.

The shower control valve in the conservatory is a one-piece unit.

The conservatory shower has a more typical round black plastic covering.

All the screws and valves were left uncovered.

Charlie asked our contractor how to deal with the Hardie backer in these two instances.

The conservatory shower has a simpler control.

He said the black plastic pieces are just place holders for the actual mechanism so remove them and cut holes to accommodate what remains.

We returned the plastic keeper to protect the valve until the tiling is finished.

I hope this will work.

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

    1. I always have a million questions. It’s great when a friend with a relaxed mental attitude is helping (actually doing most of the work). Jo
