A Simple Shelf?

Before we install the doors on the front of the double closet in the conservatory I thought we should hang a shelf with a hanging bar.

The conservatory closet has a washer/dryer hook-up on the far left and needs a shelf for storage before the doors are installed.

After looking around the one we liked best is the one our contractor had put in the mudroom closet.

The long shelf is 16 inches wide with a hanging bar at the 12-inch mark unlike the narrower shelves on the side.

Aside front having an integral hanging bar it is 16 inches wide.  Typically these white wire “wardrobe” shelves are only 12 inches wide.

Home Depot has a serious bolt cutter near its shelving so it can be cut to the exact desired length.

Charlie called the contractor to find out where he got it: “Home Depot”.

First I went to two Home Depots and couldn’t find this particular shelf.

There was plenty of shelving, just not what I was looking for.

Then I looked it up on the internet and both of our nearest HDs gave aisle #, bin #, and amount on hand.  I returned and with the help of a customer service rep, still could not find this item. (You know I also looked at Lowes and searched the internet for another source.)

There are lots of hardware options depending on the shelf selected.

Now it’s on! I’m going to find this shelf this week and install it.

Why is every little detail so hard to accomplish?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.

    1. Can’t wait to clear the clutter from this closet and just hang stuff there. Maybe when the conservatory is finished. I do have the doors, though, which will hide the contents. Jo
