First Sign of Christmas at The Glade

My very favorite Christmas decoration — the thing that makes Christmas for me — is the manger scene or crèche.

One year I put the Holy family under a glass dome and surrounded them with lights.

In the past I have used a crèche on the mantel and even on top of the piano. I have a small collection so I like to spread them over the house.

The mantel display from 2011 included a crèche, fresh pine boughs, and lights.

This year the ceramic crèche has moved from the mantel to the bottom shelf of the glass coffee table where it can be easily seen but relatively safe from breaking.

I've placed the Wise Men in the East but it seems to throw off the balance so we might rearrange discarding historical accuracy.

I like this manger scene because it was the first one I ever owned and the faces of the figurines are so pretty.

As the days go on we’ll be bringing down even more seasonal items from the attic in an effort to deck the halls.

What makes it Christmas for you?

Welcome to The Glade, where the second generation of renovations has just begun and the mania about our home, music and other passions fill our days and nights. We’re Charlie and Jo in the music world; Mary Jo and Charles to family; and JoJo and Charlie to each other. We are renovating a midcentury house in a Victorian historic district where we want to live there the rest of our lives. It's a 1946 house located in Maryland. We were married in this house. Thus far (pre-blog) we refinished cabinets, added a window seat (still working on the cushion), rearranged a wall in the guest house due to sink/vanity replacement, planted a vegetable garden, and other quick and not-so-quick fixes. So this latest zeal for construction is the result of my having lived here since 1997 and feeling a need to ready the house for the next chapter and beyond.
