I told you here how much I love dishes. One of the sets that I’ve collected over the years is the Merrileaf pattern (circa the 1960s) by Red Wing.
From time to time I search that very word “Merrileaf” on the internet and recently made a fabulous find on Etsy.
To quote from the ad: 71 “Pieces include 12 (6″ plates), 7 (10″ plates), 1Bread Platter, 1 Relish Dish, 4 small relish dishes, 3 soup/salad/ bowls, 7 Personal butter etc. dishes, Salt & Pepper, Gravy, Sugar Bowl, 9 cups, 12 saucers, 1 large meat Platter w/small chip, 5 10″ plates w/chips (1 very minor), 3 soup bowls w/ chip (2 minor), 1 personal butter dish w/minor chip, and the creamer has a broken handle.
They are in great condition with only the usual glazing bubbles. No crazing or cracking.”
This whole load was mailed from Michigan in 4 boxes and cost me $350 including shipping (which is less than $5 per dish). Woo-hoo.
Two boxes came one day, one the next, and then the final one. I was so delighted when I saw how carefully they were packed and the pristine condition of most of the pieces. The ones I already owned were well-used and some had silverware marks on the plates, these new ones were mostly in the mint condition category.
Now I have:
- 21 10″ Dinner plates (9 with chips)
- 19 7″ Salad plates (3 with chips)
- 2 6″ Bread and butter plates
- 22 Cups
- 72 Saucers
- 6 Fruit bowls
- 9 Cereal, salad, soup bowls (2 with chips)
- 1 13″ Platter
- 1 15″ Platter
- 1 Vegetable serving bowl
- 1 Divided vegetable serving bowl
- 8 Ash trays
- 1 6 piece relish set (tray missing)
- 3 Gravy or sauce boat (with 2 lids)
- 1 Salt and pepper shaker set
- 3 Creamers (1 broken handle)
- 3 Sugar bowls (with 2 lids)
- 1 Butter dish (no lid)
- 1 19″ Bread tray
- 1 16″ Celery dish
It’s quite a collection which I now have to find a place to store that has easy access because I love using these Merrileaf dishes.
What’s your collection? How do you add to it? One at a time or en masse?
Sidebar: Look what happened when I started unloading my dish cabinet. I should really be more careful.
