Selling is Not That Easy

I painted this desk black months ago.  Painted on the sides and back are a piano keyboard.

A surprise musical motif on an newly painted desk.

We don’t really have room for this desk so I’ve listed it on Craigslist more than once. The original price was $470.  I didn’t pick that number and realized I wouldn’t pay that much for it so I reduced the price to $350.

A sturdy black desk with vintage brass drawer pulls and a surprise.

In the mean time we have been storing it under cover in the Cottage.  If you recall, the drawers were all working smoothly and the finish was deep black and smooth all over.

The finish was lovely.

Then we got a few calls enquiring about the desk so when we uncovered it I thought I should give it another coat of wax since I had waxed the desk with clear paste wax after painting it.

Everything was waxed and polished with paste wax.

Well, instead of using Butcher’s wax I used Briwax which took off some of the finish. YIKES!  And two of the drawers were no longer running smoothly.

Once I calmed down I removed the wax with mineral spirits and gave the top of the desk another coat of black paint using a painting pad. It went on very smoothly.

White satin spray paint and black semi-gloss.

And I turned on the air conditioner to remove the humidity in the Cottage because I believe the humidity caused the wood to swell thus preventing the drawers from gliding smoothly.

SOLD!

A young man piano player was the first to look at our desk and he bought it. $300. Woo-hoo!

Do you store things away only to find out they’ve morphed on their own? What’s your first reaction?

Sidebar: Men and women are soooooo different.  He (the pianist) asked if the drawer pulls would polish up to a nice shine.  Charlie explained that they had been really dirty and I had cleaned them but that I liked the vintage patina. She (the clarinetist) said she, too, preferred them just the way they are.
