Repotting the Amaryllis

Last year a dear friend gave me a blooming amaryllis. It was stunning.  I let it die back and didn’t water it all summer.

The pot is becoming too small for this amaryllis bulb.

Lately a little tongue of a sprout began to show through so I thought I’d try transplanting it to a slightly larger pot. Slightly larger because I still wanted to keep it in the ram’s head urn in the dining room.

Moving from the smaller to the larger pot.

The root system is strong and appears healthy so I removed the bulb, dirt, roots and all from one pot and put it in a new pot with some lovely compost.

A paper towel in the bottom of the pot deters the dirt from leaking out the holes.

I watered it and am watching to see if it will bloom again.

The shoulder of the bulb should sit above the soil line.

Just a small change.

The larger pot gives the bulb a scoash more room to grow.

Do you keep amaryllis bulbs from year to year?  Any tips to pass on?
