No Matchy Match

Once the kitchen wall (formerly behind the refrigerator) had been replaced I needed to decide what to do with the wall since I had no more wallpaper left to match the kitchen.

Sample of Kitchen Wallpaper

We wanted to turn this area into a coffee bar set-up since we seldom make a whole pot of coffee anymore, we use the espresso machine.

The first order of business was to get the wall and cabinets primed and painted.

I primed the side of the cabinets and the wall with Zinsser primer.

After priming I gave the sides and undersides of the cabinets a couple of coats of white semigloss.

The white paint on the cabinets brightened up the kitchen.

I used some old (at least 10 years old) paint from the living room which needed stirring but came together nicely.

The separated paint stirred together to provide a nice base color with which to mix.

Then I pulled out my tubes and cans of yellows and coral to brighten up the ochre shade.

Every container of yellow paint was emptied into the mix, including some coral paint used in this table.

Once the paint was mixed I used a few lighter versions to give a mottled effect something like (but not exactly like) the variations in the wallpaper.

The light splotches are intentional, Charlie.

The edge of the counter had been cut off when it was installed a few years ago because the edge was hidden by the refrigerator.

The edge of the counter was left unfinished from the original installation.

Well, Charlie gingerly pried off the laminate on the end and reglued it to the naked edge of the counter.  Another reason for saving anything and everything “just in case”.

A little spray adhesive on the laminate edge holds it in place on the counter.

After

The wall and counters are fully painted.

And now I need to decide if we should leave it like this or go one step further.  What say ye?
