Unfortunately there was a nasty kind of rotten smell coming from the laundry room which we couldn’t quite place. It wasn’t the dirty clothes lying on the floor.

We’ve been using liquid HE detergent since we bought the front-loader a few years ago. When I googled this problem as I have others (for example here) I found out other people had the same trouble.

The suggestion was to switch from liquid to dry detergent. There was a long involved explanation as to why this works. I don’t really care why. So we switched to dry detergent and, it’s true, the odor is GONE.
